Bible 365
For over 30 years I’ve talked with men and women who deeply love God, but struggle to understand the Bible. Some believe that unless you are a Theologian, Pastor, or Christian leader, you really can’t understand it. But this is just not true. I’ve launched this simple podcast to help everyday men and women fall in love with the Word of God. Each day I’ll read a portion of Scriptures from the Old and New Testament, covering the entire Bible in one year. After I’ll give a brief devotional. Welcome to day 237 of the Bible 365 podcast. My name is Randy Gudo, and today we're going to be reading through Job chapters 16 through 19, 1 Corinthians chapter 16, Psalm chapter 40, verses 1 through 10, and Proverbs chapter 22, verse 1. The translation I'm using throughout this podcast is the Berean Standard Bible, also known as the BSB. Let's read. Job chapter 16. Then Job answered, I have heard many things like these. Miserable comforters are you all. Is there no end to your long-winded speeches? What provokes you to continue testifying? I could also speak like you if you were in my place. I could heap up words against you and shake my head at you, but I would encourage you with my mouth, and the consolation of my lips would bring relief. Even if I speak, my pain is not relieved, and if I hold back, how will it go away? Surely he has now exhausted me. You have devastated all my family. You have bound me, and it has become a witness. My frailty rises up and testifies against me. His anger has torn me and opposed me. He gnashes his teeth at me. My adversary pierces me with his eyes. They open their mouths against me and strike my cheeks with contempt. They join together against me. God has delivered me to unjust men. He has thrown me to the clutches of the wicked. I was at ease, but he shattered me. He seized me by the neck and crushed me. He has set me up as his target. His archers surround me. He pierces my kidneys without mercy and spills my gall on the ground. He breaks me with wound upon wound. He rushes me like a mighty warrior. I have sewn sackcloth over my skin. I have buried my horn in the dust. My face is red with weeping, and deep shadows wring my eyes. Yet my hands are free of violence, and my prayer is pure. O earth, do not cover my blood. May my cry for help never be laid to rest. Even now my witness is in heaven, and my advocate is on high. My friends are my scoffers as my eyes pour out tears to God. O that a man might plead with God as he pleads with his neighbor. For when only a few years are past, I will go the way of no return. Job chapter 17. My spirit is broken, my days are extinguished, the grave awaits me. Surely mockers surround me, and my eyes must gaze at their rebellion. Give me, I pray, the pledge you demand. Who else will be my guarantor? You have closed their minds to understanding, therefore you will not exalt them. If a man denounces his friends for a price, the eyes of his children will fail. He has made me a byword among the people, a man in whose face they spit. My eyes have grown dim with grief, and my whole body is but a shadow. The upright are appalled at this, and the innocent are stirred against the godless. Yet a righteous one holds to his way, and the one with clean hands grows stronger. But come back and try again, all of you, for I will not find a wise man among you. My days have passed, my plans are broken off, even the desires of my heart. They have turned night into day, making light seem near in the face of darkness. If I look for Sheol as my home, if I spread out my bed in darkness, and say to corruption, You are my father, and to the worm, my mother, or my sister, where then is my hope? Who can see any hope for me? Will it go down to the gates of Sheol? Will we go down together into the dust? Job chapter 18. Then Bildad the Shuhite replied, How long until you end these speeches? Show some sense and then we can talk. Why are we regarded as cattle, as stupid in your sight? You who tear yourself in anger, should the earth be forsaken on your account, or the rocks be moved from their place? Indeed, the lamp of the wicked is extinguished, the flame of his fire does not glow. The light in his tent grows dark, and the lamp beside him goes out. His vigorous stride is shortened, and his own schemes trip him up, for his own feet lead him into a net, and he wanders into its mesh. A trap seizes his heel, a snare grips him. A noose is hidden in the ground, and a trap lies in his path. Terrors frighten him on every side and harasses every step. His strength is depleted, and calamity is ready at his side. It devours patches of his skin. The firstborn of death devours his limbs. He is torn from the shelter of his tent and is marched off to the king of terrors. Fire resides in his tent, burning sulfur rains down on his dwelling. The roots beneath him dry up, and the branches above him wither away. The memory of him perishes from the earth, and he has no name in the land. He is driven from light into darkness and is chased from the inhabited world. He has no offspring or posterity among his people, no survivor where he once lived. Those in the west are appalled at his fate, while those in the east tremble in horror. Surely such is the dwelling of the wicked and the place of one who does not know God. Job chapter nineteen Then Job answered, How long will you torment me and crush me with your words? Ten times now you have reproached me, you shamelessly mistreat me. Even if I have truly gone astray, my error concerns me alone. If indeed you would exalt yourselves above me and use my disgrace against me, then understand that it is God who has wronged me and drawn his net around me. Though I cry out violence, I get no response. Though I call for help, there is no justice. He has blocked my way so I cannot pass. He has veiled my paths with darkness. He has stripped me of my honor and removed the crown from my head. He tears me down on every side until I am gone. He uproots my hope like a tree. His anger burns against me, and he counts me among his enemies. His troops advance together. They construct a ramp against me and encamp around my tent. He has removed my brothers from me, my acquaintances have abandoned me, my kinsmen have failed me, and my friends have forgotten me. My guests and maidservants count me as a stranger. I am a foreigner in their sight. I call for my servant, but he does not answer, though I implore him with my own mouth. My breath is repulsive to my wife, and I am loathsome to my own family. Even little boys scorn me. When I appear, they deride me. All my best friends despise me, and those I love have turned against me. My skin and flesh cling to my bones. I have escaped by the skin of my teeth. Have pity on me, my friends, have pity, for the hand of God has struck me. Why do you persecute me as God does? Will you never get enough of my flesh? I wish that my words were recorded and inscribed in a book, by an iron stylus on lead, or chiseled in stone forever. But I know that my Redeemer lives, and in the end he will stand upon the earth. Even after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God. I will see him for myself, my eyes will behold him, and not as a stranger. How my heart yearns within me. If you say, Let us persecute him, since the root of the matter lies with him, then you should fear the sword yourselves, because wrath brings punishment by the sword, so that you may know there is a judgment. Now about the collection for the saints, you are to do as I directed the churches of Galatia. On the first day of every week, each of you should set aside a portion of his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will be needed. Then, on my arrival, I will send letters with those you recommend to carry your gift to Jerusalem. And if it is advisable for me to go also, they can travel with me. After I go through Macedonia, however, I will come to you, for I will be going through Macedonia. Perhaps I will stay with you a while, or even spend the winter, so that you can help me on my journey wherever I go. For I do not want to see you now only in passing. I hope to spend some time with you, if the Lord permits, but I will stay in Ephesus until Pentecost, because a great door for effective work has opened to me, even though many oppose me. If Timothy comes, see to it that he has nothing to fear while he is with you, for he is doing the work of the Lord, just as I am. No one then should treat him with contempt. Send him on his way in peace so that he can return to me, for I am expecting him along with the brothers. Now about our brother Apollos, I strongly urged him to go to you with the brothers. He was not at all inclined to go now, but he will go when he has the opportunity. Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, be men of courage, be strong, do everything in love. You know that Stephanus and his household were the first converts in Achaea, and they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints. Now I urge you, brothers, to submit to such as these, and to every fellow worker and laborer. I am glad that Stephanus, Fortunatus, and Achaichus have arrived, because they have supplied what was lacking from you. For they refreshed my spirit and yours as well. Show your appreciation, therefore, to such men. The churches in the province of Asia send you greetings. Aquila and Prissa greet you warmly in the Lord, and so does the church that meets at their house. All the brothers here send you greetings. Greet one another with a holy kiss. This greeting is in my own hand, Paul. If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be under a curse. Come, O Lord, the grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. My love be with all of you in Christ Jesus. Amen. Psalm chapter forty, verses one through ten. I waited patiently for the Lord. He inclined to me and heard my cry. He lifted me up from the pit of despair, out of the miry clay. He set my feet upon a rock and made my footsteps firm. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord. Blessed is the man who has made the Lord his trust, who has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood. Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders you have done, and the plans you have for us, none can compare to you. If I proclaim and declare them, they are more than I can count. Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have opened. Burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. Then I said, Here I am, I have come. It is written about me in the scroll. I delight to do your will, O my God, your law is within my heart. I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly. Behold, I do not seal my lips, as you, O Lord, do know. I have not covered up your righteousness in my heart. I have declared your faithfulness and salvation. I have not concealed your loving devotion and faithfulness from the great assembly. Proverbs twenty two, verse one. A good name is more desirable than great riches. Favor is better than silver and gold. Today's devotional is coming from Job chapter 19, verses twenty five through twenty seven. This is such a powerful thing that Job is about to say. There's a lot of things that Job does not know. He doesn't know why he is suffering like he is. He doesn't know why he has lost so much, you know, children, his wealth. I mean, it's just really bleak. And not only that, but he's surrounded by friends who are not being friends to him. They're not giving him good counsel. They're not trying to encourage him. And he doesn't know why God seems to be against him. He wishes that he had never been born. And so here now, in the midst of all these deep, burning questions, agony, despair, absolute depression and sorrow, he says this. But I know that my Redeemer lives. So there was a lot that Job did not know, but what he does know is that his Redeemer lives. And in the end, he will stand upon the earth. There is going to come an end to that suffering. There's going to come an end to the questioning. And in the end, he knows that his Redeemer who lives will stand upon the earth. Even after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God. This reminds me of when David said that he would have fainted unless he had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Job says, Even after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God. I will see him for myself. My eyes will behold him, and not as a stranger. And then now listen to the last thing he says right here. How my heart yearns within me. On the outside of Job, it's bleak, it's bad, he's wasting away, he's dying. But on the inside, there's a burning taking place in his heart because he knows that his Redeemer lives. He knows that in the end he will stand upon the earth. He knows that in his flesh he will see God. He knows that he will see him for himself, that his eyes will behold him and not as a stranger. And so therefore his heart it's yearning within him. You could be in a place right now where you are suffering, you have questions, maybe you have some people around you, and they're not helping you, they're not giving you good counsel. Maybe they're judging you or you know the situation that you are in. And I hope that on the inside of you, your heart is yearning, because you know that your Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth, and you will see him for yourself. Your eyes will behold him, and not as a stranger. Let's pray. Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus, and I lift up all of our listeners today, but especially those who are in a place of tremendous suffering. I pray that this devotional today would speak to them, that it would challenge and encourage them, that they would truly know that their Redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth. Draw us close by the presence of your Holy Spirit and reveal your Son to us. We ask all these things in the precious name of Jesus. Amen. Well, I sure hope you enjoyed today's devotional.
