Bible 365
For over 30 years I’ve talked with men and women who deeply love God, but struggle to understand the Bible. Some believe that unless you are a Theologian, Pastor, or Christian leader, you really can’t understand it. But this is just not true. I’ve launched this simple podcast to help everyday men and women fall in love with the Word of God. Each day I’ll read a portion of Scriptures from the Old and New Testament, covering the entire Bible in one year. After I’ll give a brief devotional. Welcome to day 236 of the Bible 365 podcast. My name is Randy Goudow and today we're going to be reading through Job chapters 12 through 15, 1 Corinthians chapter 15, verses 29 through 58, Psalm chapter 39, and Proverbs chapter 21 verses 30 and 31. The translation I'm using throughout this podcast is the Berean Standard Bible, also known as the BSB. Let's read. Job chapter 12. Then Job answered, Truly then, you are the people with whom wisdom itself will die. But I also have a mind. I am not inferior to you. Who does not know such things as these? I am a laughing stock to my friends, though I called on God and he answered. The righteous and upright man is a laughing stock. The one at ease scorns misfortune as the fate of those whose feet are slipping. The tents of robbers are safe, and those who provoke God are secure, those who carry their God in their hands. But ask the animals, and they will instruct you. Ask the birds of the air, and they will tell you, or speak to the earth, and it will teach you. Let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? The life of every living thing is in his hand, as well as the breath of all mankind. Does not the ear test words as the tongue tastes its food? Wisdom is found with the elderly, and understanding comes with long life. Wisdom and strength belong to God. Counsel and understanding are his. What he tears down cannot be rebuilt. The man he imprisons cannot be released. If he holds back the waters, they dry up, and if he releases them, they overwhelm the land. True wisdom and power belong to him. The deceived and the deceiver are his. He leads counselors away barefoot and makes fools of judges. He loosens the bonds placed by kings and fastens a belt around their waist. He leads priests away barefoot and overthrows the established. He deprives the trusted of speech and takes away the discernment of elders. He pours out contempt on nobles and disarms the mighty. He reveals the deep things of darkness and brings deep shadows into light. He makes nations great and destroys them. He enlarges nations, then disperses them. He deprives the earth's leaders of reason and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland. They grope in the darkness without light, he makes them stagger like drunkards. Job chapter thirteen. Indeed my eyes have seen all this, my ears have heard and understood. What you know I also know, I am not inferior to you. Yet I desire to speak to the Almighty and argue my case before God. You, however, smear with lies. You are all worthless physicians. If only you would remain silent, for that would be your wisdom. Hear now my argument and listen to the plea of my lips. Will you speak wickedly on God's behalf or speak deceitfully for him? Would you show him partiality or argue in his defense? Would it be well when he examined you? Could you deceive him as you would deceive a man? Surely he would rebuke you if you secretly showed partiality. Would his majesty not terrify you? Would the dread of him not fall upon you? Your maxims are proverbs of ashes, your defenses are defenses of clay. Be silent and I will speak. Then let come to me what may. Why do I put myself at risk and take my life in my own hands? Though he slay me, I will hope in him. I will still defend my ways to his face. Moreover, this will be my salvation, for no godless man can appear before him. Listen carefully to my words, let my declaration ring in your ears. See now, I have prepared my case. I know that I will be vindicated. Can anyone indict me? If so, I will be silent and die. Only grant these two things to me, so that I need not hide from you. Withdraw your hand from me, and do not let your terror frighten me. Then call me and I will answer, or let me speak and you can reply. How many are my iniquities and sins? Reveal to me my transgression and sin. Why do you hide your face and consider me as your enemy? Would you frighten a windblown leaf? Would you chase after dry chaff? For you record bitter accusations against me and bequeath to me the iniquities of my youth. You put my feet in the stalks and stand watch over all my paths. You set a limit for the soles of my feet. So man waste away like something rotten, like a moth-eaten garment. Job chapter 14. Man, who is born of woman, is short of days and full of trouble. Like a flower, he comes forth, then withers away. Like a fleeting shadow, he does not endure. Do you open your eyes to one like this? Will you bring him into judgment before you? Who can bring out clean from unclean? No one. Since his days are determined and the number of his months is with you, and since you have set limits that he cannot exceed, look away from him and let him rest, so he can enjoy his day as a hired hand. For there is hope for a tree. If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its tender shoots will not fail. If its roots grow old in the ground and its stump dies in the soil, at the scent of water it will bud and put forth twigs like a sapling. But a man dies and is laid low, he breathes his last, and where is he? As water disappears from the sea and a river becomes parched and dry, so a man lies down and does not rise. Until the heavens are no more, he will not be awakened or roused from sleep. If only you would hide me in Sheol and conceal me until your anger has passed. If only you would appoint a time for me and then remember me. When a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my hard service I will wait until my renewal comes. You will call and I will answer. You will desire the work of your hands. For then you would count my steps, but would not keep track of my sin. My transgression would be sealed in a bag, and you would cover over my iniquity. But as a mountain erodes and crumbles, and a rock is dislodged from its place, as water wears away the stones and torrents wash away the soil, so you destroy a man's hope. You forever overpower him, and he passes on. You change his countenance and send him away. If his sons receive honor, he does not know it. If they are brought low, he is unaware. He feels only the pain of his own body and mourns only for himself. Job chapter 15. Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied, Does a wise man answer with empty counsel or fill his belly with the hot east wind? Should he argue with useless words or speeches that serve no purpose? But you even undermine the fear of God and hinder meditation before him? For your iniquity instructs your mouth, and you choose the language of the crafty. Your own mouth, not mine, condemns you, your own lips testify against you. Were you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills? Do you listen in on the counsel of God or limit wisdom to yourself? What do you know that we do not? What do you understand that is not clear to us? Both the grey haired and the aged are on our side, men much older than your father. Are the consolations of God not enough for you? Even words spoken gently to you? Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash, so that you turn your spirit against God and pour such words from your mouth? What is man that he should be pure, or one born of woman that he should be righteous? If God puts no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes, how much less man who is vile and corrupt, who drinks injustice like water? Listen to me and I will inform you. I will describe what I have seen, what was declared by wise men and was not concealed from their fathers, to whom alone the land was given when no foreigner passed among them. A wicked man rides in pain all his days, only a few years are reserved for the ruthless. Sounds of terror fill his ears. In his prosperity the destroyer attacks him. He despairs of his return from darkness. He is marked for the sword. He wanders about as food for vultures. He knows the day of darkness is at hand. Distress and anguish terrify him, overwhelming him like a king poised to attack. For he has stretched out his hand against God and has vaunted himself against the Almighty, rushing headlong at him with a thick studded shield. Though his face is covered with fat and his waistline bulges with flesh, he will dwell in ruined cities and abandoned houses destined to become rubble. He will no longer be rich, his wealth will not endure, his possessions will not overspread the land, he will not escape from the darkness. The flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God's mouth will carry him away. Let him not deceive himself with trust in emptiness, for emptiness will be his reward. It will be paid in full before his time, and his branch will not flourish. He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree that sheds its blossoms. For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of bribery. They conceive trouble and give birth to evil. Their womb is pregnant with deceit. If these things are not so, what will those do who are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized for them? And why do we endanger ourselves every hour? I face death every day, brothers, as surely as I boast about you in Christ Jesus our Lord. If I fought wild beast in Ephesus for human motives, what did I gain? If the dead are not raised, let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die. Do not be deceived. Bad company corrupts good character. Sober up as you ought, and stop sinning. For some of you are ignorant of God. I say this to your shame. But someone will ask, How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come? You fool, what you sow does not come to life unless it dies. And what you sow is not the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or something else. But God gives it a body as he has designed, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body. Not all flesh is the same. Men have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another, and fish another. There are also heavenly bodies and earthly bodies. But the splendor of the heavenly bodies is of one degree, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is of another. The sun has one degree of splendor, the moon another, and the stars another, and star differs from star in splendor. So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable, it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power, it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. So it is written. The first man Adam became a living being, the last Adam a life-giving spirit. The spiritual, however, was not first, but the natural, and then the spiritual. The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. As was the earthly man, so also are those who are of the earth, and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven. And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so also shall we bear the likeness of the heavenly man. Now I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Listen, I tell you a mystery, we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed. In an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet, for the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must be clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come to pass. Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and immovable. Always excel in the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. Psalm 39. I said, I will watch my ways so that I will not sin with my tongue. I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are present. I was speechless and still, I remained silent, even from speaking good, and my sorrow was stirred. My heart grew hot within me, as I mused, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue. Show me, O Lord, my end and the measure of my days. Let me know how fleeting my life is. You indeed have made my days as handbreaths, and my lifetime as nothing before you. Truly each man at his best exists as but a breath. Selah. Surely every man goes about like a phantom, surely he bustles in vain. He heaps up riches, not knowing who will haul them away. And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you. Deliver me from all my transgressions, do not make me the reproach of fools. I have become mute, I do not open my mouth because of what you have done. Remove your scourge from me, I am perishing by the force of your hand. You discipline and correct a man for his iniquity, consuming like a moth what he holds dear. Surely each man is but a vapor. Selah. Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry for help. Do not be deaf to my weeping, for I am a foreigner dwelling with you, a stranger like all my fathers. Turn your gaze away from me, that I may again be cheered before I depart and am no more. Proverbs twenty one, verses thirty and thirty one. There is no wisdom, no understanding, no counsel that can prevail against the Lord. A horse is prepared for the day of battle, but victory is of the Lord. Today's devotional is coming from first Corinthians chapter fifteen, verses thirty three and thirty four, and if I was going to name today's, you know, devotional anything, it would be, Hey you, stop that. Paul says, To this church at Corinth, a church that is absolutely just walking in all the gifts of the Holy Spirit in such a way that he had to give them instructions, which we see in chapter twelve and in chapter fourteen. I mean, he told the Corinthians that they did not come short in any gift of the Spirit, but they were very carnal. Listen to him now. Do not be deceived. Bad company corrupts good character. Sober up as you ought. In the ESV it says, wake up from your drunken stupor as is right. But now in the BSV, sober up as you ought and stop sinning. For some of you are ignorant of God. Amazing how they again were so full of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, but yet they were ignorant of God. And then he says this right here I say this to your shame. And the NLT. It says, For to your shame I say that some of you don't know God at all. So listen to me. We celebrate a resurrected, risen Savior, Jesus Christ, who overcame death, hell, and the grave. He was raised up by the power of the Holy Spirit. I feel like I've been saying that a good bit lately. And he sent his Holy Spirit to infill us, to empower us, to be witnesses. And yet, how many of us that know better still continue on sinning and wonder how come we don't feel the favor of God over our lives? Well, we don't experience his power in our lives. For some of us, it could be because you're just hanging out with the wrong people. Bad company corrupts good character. And what is the answer? Not go pray harder. What is the answer? Read more of your Bible. You know, it's really simple. Sober up and stop sinning. Some of us need to look in the mirror and point and say, Hey you. Stop that. You already have access to all that you need. You already know a lot. So come on. Hey you stop that. Let's pray. Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus. And today I'll lift up all of our listeners. And for those that maybe live in lives of habitual sin and they pacify it or they justify it, or they just live through the same cycle over and over of shame, guilt, and condemnation. I pray that your word today would speak so clear to them and that they would feel boldness come over them as they sober up, wake up, and stop sinning. I thank you for the power of your Holy Spirit that is on the inside of us, enabling us to walk as we should. Draw us close by the presence of your Holy Spirit and reveal your Son to us. We ask all these things in the precious name of Jesus. Amen. Well, I sure hope you enjoyed today's devotional. If you're getting something out of the Bible 365 podcast, consider sharing it with your family and with your friends. Please continue to pray for me. I am praying for you. Have a great day, and I'll see you tomorrow with day 237.
