Bible 365
For over 30 years I’ve talked with men and women who deeply love God, but struggle to understand the Bible. Some believe that unless you are a Theologian, Pastor, or Christian leader, you really can’t understand it. But this is just not true. I’ve launched this simple podcast to help everyday men and women fall in love with the Word of God. Each day I’ll read a portion of Scriptures from the Old and New Testament, covering the entire Bible in one year. After I’ll give a brief devotional. Welcome to day 235 of the Bible 365 podcast. My name is Randy Goudo, and today we're going to be reading through Job chapters 8 through 11, 1 Corinthians chapter 15, verses 1 through 28, Psalm chapter 38, and Proverbs chapter 21, verses 28 and 29. The translation I'm using throughout this podcast is the Berean Standard Bible, also known as the BSB. Let's read. Job chapter 8. Then Bildad the Shuhite replied, How long will you go on saying such things? The words of your mouth are a blustering wind. Does God pervert justice? Does the Almighty pervert what is right? When your children sinned against him, he gave them over to their rebellion. But if you would earnestly seek God and ask the Almighty for mercy, if you are pure and upright, even now he will rouse himself on your behalf and restore your righteous estate. Though your beginnings were modest, your latter days will flourish. Please inquire of past generations and consider the discoveries of their fathers. For we were born yesterday and know nothing. Our days on earth are but a shadow. Will they not teach you and tell you and speak from their understanding? Does papress grow where there is no marsh? Do reeds flourish without water? While the shoots are still uncut, they dry up more quickly than grass. Such is the destiny of all who forget God, so the hope of the godless will perish. His confidence is fragile, his security is in a spider's web. He leans on his web, but it gives way. He holds fast, but it does not endure. He is a well-watered plant in the sunshine, spreading its shoots over the garden. His roots wrap around the rock heap. He looks for a home among the stones. If he is uprooted from his place, it will disown him, saying, I never saw you. Surely this is the joy of his way. Yet others will spring from the dust. Behold, God does not reject the blameless, nor will he strengthen the hand of evildoers. He will yet fill your mouth with laughter, and your lips with a shout of joy. Your enemies will be clothed in shame, and the tent of the wicked will be no more. Job chapter nine. Then Job answered, Yes, I know that it is so, but how can a mortal be righteous before God? If one wished to contend with God, he could not answer him one time out of a thousand. God is wise in heart and mighty in strength, who has resisted him and prospered? He moves mountains without their knowledge and overturns them in his anger. He shakes the earth from its place so that its foundations tremble. He commands the sun not to shine, he seals off the stars. He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea. He is the maker of the bear and Orion, of the Pleiades and the constellations of the south. He does great things beyond searching out, and wanders without number. Were he to pass by me, I would not see him. Were he to move, I would not recognize him. If he takes away, who can stop him? Who dares to ask him, What are you doing? God does not restrain his anger. The helpers of Rahab cower beneath him. How then can I answer him or choose my arguments against him? For even if I were right, I could not answer. I could only beg my judge for mercy. If I summoned him and he answered me, I do not believe he would listen to my voice, for he would crush me with a tempest and multiply my wounds without calls. He does not let me catch my breath, but overwhelms me with bitterness. If it is a matter of strength, he is indeed mighty. If it is a matter of justice, who can summon him? Even if I were righteous, my mouth would condemn me. If I were blameless, it would declare me guilty. Though I am blameless, I have no concern for myself. I despise my own life. It is all the same, and so I say, He destroys both the blameless and the wicked. When the scourge brings sudden death, he mocks the despair of the innocent. The earth is given into the hand of the wicked, he blindfolds its judges. If it is not he, then who is it? My days are swifter than a runner, they flee without seeing good. They sweep by like boats of paparas, like an eagle swooping down on its prey. If I were to say, I will forget my complaint and change my expression and smile, I would still dread all my sufferings. I know that you will not acquit me. Since I am already found guilty, why should I labor in vain? If I should wash myself with snow and cleanse my hands with lie, then you would plunge me into the pit, and even my own clothes would despise me. For he is not a man like me, that I can answer him, that we can take each other to court, nor is there a mediator between us to lay his hand upon us both. Let him remove his rod from me, so that his terror will no longer frighten me. Then I would speak without fear of him, but as it is, I am on my own. Job chapter 10. I loathe my own life. I will express my complaint and speak in the bitterness of my soul. I will say to God, Do not condemn me, let me know why you prosecute me. Does it please you to oppress me, to reject the work of your hands and favor the schemes of the wicked? Do you have eyes of flesh? Do you see as man sees? Are your days like those of a mortal, or your years like those of a man? That you should seek my iniquity and search out my sin, though you know that I am not guilty, and there is no deliverance from your hand. Your hands shaped me and altogether formed me. Would you now turn and destroy me? Please remember that you molded me like clay. Would you now return me to dust? Did you not pour me out like milk and curdle me like cheese? You clothed me with skin and flesh, and knit me together with bones and sinews. You have granted me life and loving devotion, and your care has preserved my spirit. Yet you concealed these things in your heart, and I know that this was in your mind. If I sinned, you would take note, and would not acquit me of my iniquity. If I am guilty, woe to me, and even if I am righteous, I cannot lift my head. I am full of shame and aware of my affliction. Should I hold my head high, you would haunt me like a lion, and again display your power against me. You produce new witnesses against me and multiply your anger toward me. Hardships assault me and wave after wave. Why then did you bring me from the womb? Oh that I had died and no eye had seen me. If only I had never come to be, but had been carried from the womb to the grave. Are my days not few? Withdraw from me, that I may have a little comfort, before I go, never to return, to a land of darkness and gloom, to a land of utter darkness, of deep shadow and disorder, where even the light is like darkness. Job chapter 11. Then Zophar the Naamathite replied, Should this stream of words go unanswered and such a speaker be vindicated? Should your babbling put others to silence? Will you scoff without rebuke? You have said, My doctrine is sound, and I am pure in your sight. But if only God would speak and open his lips against you, and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom, for true wisdom has two sides. Know then that God exacts from you less than your iniquity deserves. Can you fathom the deep things of God or discover the limits of the Almighty? They are higher than the heavens, what can you do? They are deeper than Sheol, what can you know? Their measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea. If he comes along to imprison you, or convenes a court, who can stop him? Surely he knows the deceit of men. If he sees iniquity, does he not take note? But a witless man can no more become wise than the cult of a wild donkey can be born a man. As for you, if you direct your heart and lift up your hands to him, if you put away the iniquity in your hand, and allow no injustice to dwell in your tents, then indeed you will lift up your face without blemish. You will stand firm and unafraid, for you will forget your misery, recalling it only as waters gone by. Your life will be brighter than noonday. Its darkness will be like the morning. You will be secure, because there is hope, and you will look around and lie down in safety. You will lie down without fear, and many will court your favor, but the eyes of the wicked will fail, and escape will elude them. They will hope for their last breath. Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preach to you, which you received, and in which you stand firm. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preach to you, otherwise you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance, that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas and then to the twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. And last of all, he appeared to me also, as to one of untimely birth. For I am the least of the apostles, and am unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God, but by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not in vain. No, I worked harder than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. Whether then it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed. But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is worthless, and so is your faith. In that case, we are also exposed as false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that He raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile, you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If our hope in Christ is for this life alone, we are to be pitied more than all men. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive, but each in his own turn. Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to him. Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority, and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For God has put everything under his feet. Now when it says that everything has been put under him, this clearly does not include the one who put everything under him. And when all things have been subjected to him, then the Son Himself will be made subject to him who put all things under him, so that God may be all in all. O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath, for your arrows have pierced me deeply, and your hand has pressed down on me. There is no soundness in my body because of your anger. There is no rest in my bones because of my sin. For my iniquities have overwhelmed me, they are a burden too heavy to bear. My wounds are foul and festering because of my sinful folly. I am bent and brought low. All day long I go about mourning, for my loins are full of burning pain, and no soundness remains in my body. I am numb and badly crushed, I groan in anguish of heart. O Lord, my every desire is before you. My groaning is not hidden from you. My heart pounds, my strength fails, and even the light of my eyes has faded. My beloved and friends shun my disease, and my kinsmen stand at a distance. Those who seek my life lay snares. Those who wish me harm speak destruction, plotting deceit all day long. But like a deaf man, I do not hear, and like a mute man, I do not open my mouth. I am like a man who cannot hear, whose mouth offers no reply. I wait for you, O Lord. You will answer, O Lord my God. For I said, Let them not gloat over me, those who taunt me when my foot slips. For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever with me. Yes, I confess my iniquity, I am troubled by my sin. Many are my enemies without cause, and many hate me without reason. Those who repay my good with evil attack me for pursuing the good. Do not forsake me, O Lord. Be not far from me, O my God. Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior. Proverbs twenty one, verses twenty eight and twenty-nine. A lying witness will perish, but the man who listens to truth will speak forever. A wicked man hardens his face, but the upright man makes his way sure. Today's devotional is not going to be any particular scripture, but it is definitely coming from 1 Corinthians chapter 15, and it's about the resurrection. In verses 16 on down, Paul says, For if the dead are not raised, then not even Christ has been raised. Obviously, there were some that were troubling the church at Corinth, saying that there was no resurrection of the dead. So Paul is giving an absolute masterpiece right here. He says, And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile, you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If our hope in Christ is for this life alone, that's so important, we are to be pitied more than all men. Now, we know that there are wonderful things that happen in our life on this side of eternity. We do have hope in Christ that he can move even right now. That's why Paul says, if our hope in Christ is for this life alone. In other words, if there is nothing on the other side of eternity, if there is no resurrection, he says we are to be pitied more than all men. Why? Because Paul suffered a lot, and so did the men who traveled with him. But look at verse 20. I guess there are specific verses I'm reading. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive, but each in his own turn, Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming, those who belong to him. Then you can read on where it's talking about Jesus destroying all dominion, authority, and power, and everything being subjected to him, and all of his enemies being put under his feet. Today, I'm just so excited as I reflect on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Do you know that we don't have to only celebrate the resurrection at Easter time? But every single day we can be thankful for that resurrection power that is working in our life every single day. The Spirit of God raised Jesus Christ from the dead, and that same spirit is working in every single believer, even right now, this day. So let's have hope in what the Lord can do today in Christ, but also let's be excited, knowing that there is another day coming where we are gonna stand before the judgment seat of Christ and on that day receive according to what we have done while on the earth in the body. It's going to be a glorious day, it's going to be an exciting day. He is risen indeed. Let's pray. Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus, and today we just celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. God, I pray that you would so stamp this on our hearts as a continual reminder day after day that we can overcome sin, we can overcome bondage, we can live as new creations in Christ Jesus, which is what we are if we have been born again because of what you have done for us in Christ through his death, burial, and resurrection. Draw us close by the presence of your Holy Spirit and reveal your Son to us. We ask all these things in the precious name of Jesus. Amen. Well, I sure hope you enjoyed today's devotional.
