Bible 365
For over 30 years I’ve talked with men and women who deeply love God, but struggle to understand the Bible. Some believe that unless you are a Theologian, Pastor, or Christian leader, you really can’t understand it. But this is just not true. I’ve launched this simple podcast to help everyday men and women fall in love with the Word of God. Each day I’ll read a portion of Scriptures from the Old and New Testament, covering the entire Bible in one year. After I’ll give a brief devotional. Welcome to day 233 of the Bible 365 podcast. My name is Randy Goudo, and today we're going to be reading through Job chapters 1 through 3, 1 Corinthians chapter 14, verses 1 through 17, Psalm chapter 37, verses 12-29, and Proverbs chapter 21, verses 25 and 26. The translation I'm using throughout this podcast is the Berean Standard Bible, also known as the BSB. Let's read. Job chapter 1. There is a man in the land of us whose name was Job, and this man was blameless and upright, fearing God and shunning evil. He had seven sons and three daughters, and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man of all the people of the east. Job's sons would take turns holding feast in their homes, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. And when the days of feasting were over, Job would send for his children to purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for all of them. For Job thought, Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts. This was Job's regular practice. One day the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them. Where have you come from? said the Lord to Satan. From roaming through the earth, he replied, and walking back and forth in it. Then the Lord said to Satan, Have you considered my servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil. Satan answered the Lord, Does Job fear God for nothing? Have you not placed a hedge on every side around him and his household and all that he owns? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But stretch out your hand and strike all that he has, and he will surely curse you to your face. Very well, said the Lord to Satan, everything he has is in your hands, but you must not lay a hand on the man himself. Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord. One day, while Job's sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, a messenger came and reported to Job. While the oxen were ploughing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, the Sabaeans swooped down and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you. While he was still speaking, another messenger came and reported. The fire of God fell from heaven, it burned and consumed the sheep and the servants, and I alone have escaped to tell you. While he was still speaking, another messenger came and reported. The Chaldeans formed three bands, raided the camels, and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you. While he was still speaking, another messenger came and reported. Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on the young people and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you. Then Job stood up, tore his robe, and shaved his head. He fell to the ground and worshipped, saying, Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord. In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrongdoing. Job chapter 2. On another day the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them to present himself before him. Where have you come from? said the Lord to Satan. From roaming through the earth, he replied, and walking back and forth in it. Then the Lord said to Satan, Have you considered my servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil. He still retains his integrity, even though you incited me against him to ruin him without cause. Skin for skin, Satan replied, A man will give up all he owns in exchange for his life. But stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face. Very well, said the Lord to Satan, he is in your hands, but you must spare his life. So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and infected Job with terrible boils from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. And Job took a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself as he sat among the ashes. Then Job's wife said to him, Do you still retain your integrity? Curse God and die. You speak as a foolish woman speaks, he told her. Should we accept from God only good and not adversity? And all this Job did not sin in what he said. Now when Job's three friends, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, heard about all this adversity that had come upon him, each of them came from his home, and they met together to go and sympathize with Job and comfort him. When they lifted up their eyes from afar, they could barely recognize Job. They began to weep aloud, and each man tore his robe and threw dust in the air over his head. Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, but no one spoke a word to him, because they saw how intense his suffering was. Job chapter three. After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth, and this is what he said. May the day of my birth perish, and the night it was said, a boy is conceived. If only that day had turned to darkness, may God above disregard it, may no light shine upon it, may darkness and gloom reclaim it, and a cloud settle over it, may the blackness of the day overwhelm it. If only darkness had taken that night away, may it not appear among the days of the year, may it never be entered in any of the months. Behold, may that night be barren, may no joyful voice come into it, may it be cursed by those who curse the day, those prepared to rouse Leviathan. May its morning stars grow dark, may it wait in vain for daylight, may it not see the breaking of dawn. For that night did not shut the doors of the womb to hide the sorrow from my eyes. Why did I not perish at birth? Why did I not die as I came from the womb? Why were their knees to receive me, and breast that I should be nursed? For now I would be lying down in peace. I would be asleep and at rest with kings and counselors of the earth, who built for themselves cities now in ruins, or with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver? Or why was I not hidden like a stillborn child, like an infant who never sees daylight? There the wicked cease from raging, and there the weary find rest. The captives enjoy their ease, they do not hear the voice of the oppressor. Both small and great are there, and the slave is freed from his master. Why is light given to the miserable and life to the bitter of soul, who long for death that does not come, and search for it like hidden treasure, who rejoice and greatly exult when they reach the grave? Why is life given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in? I sigh when food is put before me, and my groans pour out like water, for the thing I feared has overtaken me, and what I dreaded has befallen me. I am not at ease or quiet, I have no rest, for trouble has come. Earnestly pursue love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God. Indeed, no one understands him. He utters mysteries in the spirit. But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, encouragement, and comfort. The one who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. I wish that all of you could speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be edified. Now brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you, unless I bring some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching? Even in the case of lifeless instruments, such as the flute or harp, how will anyone recognize the tune they are playing unless the notes are distinct? Again, if the trumpet sounds a muffled call, who will prepare for battle? So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. Assuredly, there are many different languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. If then I do not know the meaning of someone's language, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a foreigner to me. It is the same with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, strive to excel in gifts that build up the church. Therefore, the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. What then shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind. I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. Otherwise, if you speak a blessing in spirit, how can someone who is uninstructed say amen to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other one is not edified. Psalm 37, verses 12 through 29. The wicked scheme against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them, but the Lord laughs, seeing that their day is coming. The wicked have drawn the sword and bent the bow to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose ways are upright. But their swords will pierce their own hearts, and their bows will be broken. Better is the little of the righteous than the abundance of many who are wicked. For the arms of the wicked will be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous. The Lord knows the days of the blameless, and their inheritance will last forever. In the time of evil they will not be ashamed, and in the days of famine they will be satisfied. But the wicked and enemies of the Lord will perish like the glory of the fields. They will vanish, like smoke they will fade away. The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous are gracious and giving. Surely those he blesses will inherit the land, but the cursed will be destroyed. The steps of a man are ordered by the Lord, who takes delight in his journey. Though he falls, he will not be overwhelmed, for the Lord is holding his hand. I once was young and now am old, yet never have I seen the righteous abandoned or their children begging for bread. They are ever generous and quick to lend, and their children are a blessing. Turn away from evil and do good, so that you will abide forever. For the Lord loves justice and will not forsake his saints. They are preserved forever, but the offspring of the wicked will be cut off. The righteous will inherit the land and dwell in it forever. Proverbs twenty one, verses twenty five and twenty six. The craving of the slacker kills him, because his hands refuse to work. All day long he covets more, but the righteous give without restraint. Today's devotional is coming from Job chapter one, verses twenty and twenty one. Job has just received some unbelievably horrible, horrible news. I mean, this entire book, some say that the book of Job is actually the oldest in the Old Testament, and we don't have time to get into all that right now, but it's a fascinating study. And so here is Job, this righteous man, a man who shunned evil. I mean, he was such a righteous man that God was bragging on him to Satan. And so now after Job experiences just unprecedented loss and absolute heartache, this is what he does. Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. He fell to the ground and worshipped. Oh my goodness, right in the midst of pain, so painful and so heartrending that he tore his robe and shaved his head. But yet he falls to the ground and worships. And listen to what he says. Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord. It reminds me of the scripture that says, Praise the Lord at all times. It's easy to thank the Lord and worship him when everything is going right in your life. But when the enemy comes and attacks and you are in the midst of devastating loss, things that are inexplainable, and you don't know why, you don't have answers to any of the questions. Job had no answers to the questions. He had no idea what the end result was going to be. He had no idea of how the Lord was going to bless him at the end of this season of suffering and affliction. Yet at the very beginning, he falls to the ground and worships and ends up saying, Blessed be the name of the Lord. Maybe some of you right now are experiencing tragedy, heartache, pain in your body, you know, devastation to your finances, whatever it is, I want to encourage you in this moment, right now, while you don't have the answers, to be like Job, just go into your prayer closet, fall to the ground and worship, and have a heart that says this blessed be the name of the Lord. There is a lot more that we could say about Job. We can get into some serious theology here, but that's not what this is about today. I don't care about your theology. I want to know are you someone who can fall to the ground and worship and have this come out of your mouth? Blessed be the name of the Lord in the midst of pain, sorrow, and suffering. Let's pray. Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus. And today, my prayer for all of us is that we can be like Job, quick to fall to the ground and worship, and say to you, Blessed be the name of the Lord. Draw us close by the presence of your Holy Spirit and reveal your Son to us. We ask all these things in the precious name of Jesus. Amen. Well, I sure hope you enjoyed today's devotional. If you're getting something out of the Bible 365 podcast, consider sharing it with your family and with your friends. Please continue to pray for me. I am praying for you.
